Tirumala accommodation or Tirupati: the choice
You can sleep in two places. Tirumala is the hill town with the temple, and Tirupati is the city in the valley. Tirumala accommodation saves you the drive uphill on the day of your darshan. Tirupati gives you more choice near the railway station and the bus station, and it is the base for trips to temples around the city.
The TTD, which runs the temple, also runs rooms in both places. Pilgrim rooms, choultries and dormitories exist in Tirumala, and the TTD has its own lodgings in Tirupati too. Rooms are allotted subject to availability, so treat every plan as dependent on it. This site is an independent guide and does not take bookings. Rooms are reserved through the official TTD portal.

Online quota
The TTD releases a room quota for Tirumala and Tirupati on its portal. As an example from the release for January 2027, special entry darshan opened on 24.10.2026 at 10:00 and rooms followed on the same day at 15:00. This is only an example. Dates change from month to month, so look for the monthly TTD announcement. For Tirupati, check the room category in the portal itself.
Free rooms in Tirumala
For free accommodation in Tirumala, the TTD points to the Central Reception Office near the bus stand. Allotment is not guaranteed, so keep a fallback in Tirupati.
Rates as an example
An undated TTD page lists a complex opposite the bus station with 200 INR for a non-AC room, 400 INR for AC and 600 INR for AC Deluxe per day. These are undated, so read the current rate in the portal.
A day means 24 hours from the time of allotment. If you plan a late departure, check the checkout rules when you book. The darshan itself is a separate booking, explained on the darshan page.
Hotels in Tirumala
On the hill, rooms are mostly run by the TTD. The advantage is distance. You wake up near the temple, the free Dharmaradham buses run around the clock inside the town, and you avoid the Ghat Road on the day of your darshan. If you reach Tirumala without a room, go to the reception office rather than to a stranger who offers one on the street. The TTD warns against middlemen and fake bookings, as explained on the Tirumala and darshan pages.
Tirupati hotels
Tirupati has TTD lodgings opposite the bus station and opposite or north of the railway station, and these locations help if you arrive by train or state bus. We do not name private hotels or rate them. Compare location, cancellation terms and distance to the bus stop yourself in the booking tool you use.

Which base suits you?
Choose Tirumala if
you have a fixed darshan slot, travel with older relatives or children, or want to avoid the road on the day. You depend on TTD allotment.
Choose Tirupati if
you arrive by train or bus, want more flexibility, or plan to see Sri Kalahasti and the other temples around the city on temples near Tirupati.
Plan the timing
An allotted darshan slot counts only for that time. Leave enough buffer for the road from Tirupati and avoid relying on a tight connection.
