Tirumala hills: what the town is
Tirumala is the temple town on the Seshachalam Hills, which in religious language are the Seven Hills, near Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. The Sri Venkateswara temple is here, and the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) run the town's services: rooms, free meals, buses and queues. Tirupati is the city in the plain below; Tirumala is the hill settlement above it.
According to the district administration, Tirupati and Tirumala lie 21 km apart. The ghat road uphill is 17.80 km and the road downhill 18 km, so these figures describe different things and should not be added up. How to get there is covered on the getting there page.

Tirupati and Tirumala temple tours
Guided day trips and tours that include Tirupati and Tirumala, with the details of what each offer covers.
Tirupati laddu
The sweet offering of the temple.
The laddu is the prasadam, the blessed food, that pilgrims take home from Tirumala. Prices change and no full 2026 price list is given here. One figure is useful as a value: a TTD notice of 5 October 2025 describes one free laddu worth 50 INR for each admitted senior or person with disabilities. How many laddus come with other darshan types is something to ask at the counter or on the TTD portal.
Tonsure at Kalyanakatta
Many pilgrims offer their hair as the fulfilment of a vow. The place is Kalyanakatta. According to the TTD the tonsure there is free. It is a devotional act and no requirement for visiting the temple.
The process runs by token: you receive a computer-generated token, wait in a hall, are assigned a barber and can take a warm bath afterwards. The main Kalyanakatta runs round the clock, while smaller halls work in shifts, so not every hall is open at every hour. No tip is expected, and the waiting time varies too much to quote.
Free meals: Annaprasadam
People searching for Tirumala restaurants should know that the TTD serves free meals called Annaprasadam. A notice of 7 October 2026 describes service around the clock: breakfast with upma and pongal, then meals with rice, curry, sambar, rasam and buttermilk. That does not mean every dining hall is open at every moment, and it is no promise of suitability for allergies or special diets.
Free Dharmaradham buses
Inside Tirumala the TTD runs free circular buses called Dharmaradhams, in both directions and around the clock. Nominally one comes about every 8 minutes. They link the pilgrim accommodation, the Annaprasadam halls, Kalyanakatta and the darshan complexes. Do not count on an exact departure; allow a buffer, especially in festival weeks.
Luggage deposit
According to a TTD notice of 16 June 2026, bags and mobile phones can be deposited free of charge before darshan. This is also possible at the footpaths, with a QR sticker and a collection slip. Keep the slip. No stranger who offers to "help" is owed a fee. Walkers on the Alipiri steps can hand in bags at the start, and they are collected in Tirumala.
Rules on the hill
Not allowed
The TTD prohibits meat, alcohol and other intoxicants, and smoking in Tirumala.
Flowers and offerings
Under the TTD etiquette, flowers are reserved for the deity. Offerings go into the hundi only. A donation is not required for free darshan.
Behaviour
Keep calm, wear clean clothes and wait in order. The dress code explains the clothing and the shoe rule; the darshan page covers tickets.
