Tirupati Balaji Temple history and legend

The temple stands in Tirumala on the Seshachalam Hills, the hills that religious usage calls the Seven Hills, near Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. The deity is Lord Venkateswara. The TTD, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, also calls him Srinivasa, Balaji and Venkatachalapati. All four names refer to the same deity who is venerated here, so you will meet them side by side on signs, in books and in conversation.

When you read about the origins of the temple, it helps to separate two kinds of sources. One is the religious tradition kept by the temple. The other is the account of rulers and building phases, which the district administration summarises. This page marks which is which, and it avoids giving the whole present building a single founding year, because none is established. If you are planning a visit rather than reading, start with Tirumala.

5,000 yearsAge given in the temple tradition for the deity's residence in Tirumala, not the age of the building

Tirumala history: tradition and record

Three layers, from the oldest tradition to the Vijayanagara period.

Temple tradition

According to the tradition of the temple, Venkateswara made Tirumala his dwelling 5,000 years ago. This belongs to religious belief. It is not an archaeological age for the building and should not be read as one.

Thondaman and later rulers

In the district administration's account, Thondaman is the builder. Later changes are attributed to the Cholas, the Pandyas and the Vijayanagar rulers. This describes a long period of additions rather than a single act of founding.

Vijayanagara style

The Krishnadevarayalu Mandapam is described by the TTD as a hall in the Vijayanagara style, with copper statues of Krishnadevaraya and his consorts. The TTD traces their installation to 02.01.1517 and presents this as tradition.

These layers explain why the complex is not a single monument from one period. Visitors today see an active place of worship, shaped over centuries by rulers, priests and pilgrims, and not a ruin or a museum.

Govindaraja Swamy and Padmavathi

Not everything in the story sits on the hill. The Govindaraja Swamy temple lies in the middle of Tirupati. The TTD gives 1130 as the year in which Ramanujacharya consecrated it. It is a good place to see a temple with a long record, and it is open daily from 05:00 until 21:00 according to the TTD, though that does not mean uninterrupted darshan during every ritual.

The goddess Padmavathi, also called Alamelumanga, is the consort of Venkateswara and has her own temple in Tiruchanur, about 5 km from Tirupati. Among pilgrims it is a widespread belief that this visit comes first, but it is not an entry condition for Tirumala. Both places are covered on temples near Tirupati.

Brahmotsavam and living tradition

The history continues in the festival calendar. The Brahmotsavams are recurring festivals with processions and vahanams, which are the sacred vehicles carrying the deity. In 2026 the TTD announced two periods. The Salakatla Brahmotsavams ran from 15 September until 23 September, and the Navaratri Brahmotsavams from 12 October until 20 October, which the TTD explains with Adhika Masa.

The place stays busy. The TTD reported 64,014 darshan visitors on 30.10.2026. That is a single day's count, not an average and not a capacity. The best time to visit page lists the festival dates, and darshan explains how to plan around them.

What the record does not say

You will see claims online about the wealth of the temple, its rank among pilgrimage sites or comparisons with other religious centres. Such rankings are not established, so this guide does not repeat them. What can be said with confidence is simpler. The temple is administered by the TTD, venerated as the seat of Venkateswara, and shaped by several dynasties over a long period. If you want to understand it, walk through it with respect, look at the architecture of the mandapams and listen to how pilgrims describe their own tradition.
