Tirupati Airport, Chennai or Bangalore: the routes
Almost every trip to the Tirumala temple has two parts. First you reach Tirupati, the valley town, then you go up the hills to Tirumala, where the temple stands. Tirupati Airport (TIR) is the nearest airport. Many travellers also arrive by road or rail from Chennai or Bangalore, or fly into Chennai Airport (MAA) and continue overland.
Keep the distances apart, because they measure different things. The district website gives 14 km for the airport to Tirupati, and 21 km for Tirupati to Tirumala. The two Ghat Roads on the hill have their own lengths, listed further down. Do not add these figures into one total, since the starting points are not defined more precisely. If you want a guided day instead of arranging each leg, see the temple tours.

Tirupati and Tirumala tours with transport
Private day trips and multi-day tours that include the road leg, so you do not have to organise it yourself.
Taxi and transfer from Tirupati Airport (TIR)
The airport operator lists prepaid taxis in the arrivals area and state buses on the city side that run towards Tirupati and Tirumala. Fares, departure times and journey durations are not published on that page, so ask at the prepaid counter before you get in, and keep the receipt.
Decide first whether you go straight up to Tirumala or stay the first night in Tirupati. Our where to stay page compares the two bases.
Chennai to Tirupati
The district website gives 134 km between the city of Chennai and Tirupati, and 145 km between Chennai Airport (MAA) and Tirupati. These are two separate figures with unspecified start points. The operator of the Sri Kalahasti temple mentions about 3 hours by road from Chennai, without any reserve for traffic, and that time ends in Tirupati, not at the temple on the hill. Bus connections between both cities exist.
Bangalore, the station and the bus up the hill
Three more pieces of the journey, each with its own limits.
Bangalore to Tirupati
The district website gives 248 km. The same temple operator mentions about 5 hours from Bangalore, again without time for traffic and only as far as Tirupati. A two-day private tour from Bangalore with one hotel night in Tirupati is described on the tours page.
Tirupati railway station
Tirupati is linked to the national rail network. Buses to the hill also leave from the station area, so a train arrival does not need a detour. Check timetables and fares in your booking app, as none are listed here.
Bus from Tirupati to Tirumala
An undated TTD page lists 90 INR for adults and 50 INR for children each way, or 160 INR and 90 INR return, valid for 3 days. It is an undated TTD figure, so check the fare before you travel.
The Ghat Roads and local buses in Tirumala
Two roads climb the hill, one for the way up and one for the way down.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Ghat Road uphill | 17.80 km |
| Ghat Road downhill | 18 km |
| Usual operating hours | Between 03:00 and 24:00, special arrangements are possible |
| Free Dharmaradham buses in Tirumala | Around the clock, nominally about every 8 minutes, no exact departure times |
The free Dharmaradham buses circle through Tirumala and connect lodgings, the free meal halls, the tonsure halls and the darshan complexes. They are a loop for the hilltop, not a link to Tirupati. Traffic rules can change around festivals. Two-wheelers were asked to stay off the Ghat Roads from 18 September 2026 at 21:00 until 20 September 2026 at 06:00, during the Salakatla Brahmotsavams. That was a temporary measure, so check the current TTD notices before you ride a motorbike. For what to expect on arrival, read Tirumala, and for the climb on foot see Alipiri steps.
Car hire and parking
A private car gives you control over timing, with a few things to plan for.
Renting a car at Tirupati Airport (TIR) suits travellers who want to combine the temple with other stops in the region, such as Sri Kalahasti. Compare the rental terms, insurance and fuel rules before you collect the car, and make sure you are comfortable driving on Indian roads. If you would rather leave the driving to someone else, a driver or a guided tour avoids the question.
On the way up, the TTD mentions a variable toll at the Sapthagiri Toll Plaza. It does not publish a current tariff list, so keep cash or a payment method ready and ask at the gate. Parking charges and the number of spaces are open, so plan for a short walk or a bus ride from wherever you can stop. Details for your first hours at the temple are on the darshan page.
